I do not use chat in my current MCTC course but in a nother program that I run, we have required chats. They are an amazing difference, they provide a new dimension to the class and really build camaradarie among students.
We use this tool to summarize our weeks lesson, it is a structure chat and the students know what the chat questions ara ahead of time. It allows for the "real" time feel and immediate answers.
Utiling chat as a intentional part of the online course brings a new dimension and often much needed when students feel the isolation of online learning.
Thanks Cory for your reply. I too have found that if a little structure is added to the chat, it can be quite helpful. I like your idea o giving the questions ahead of time. I am planning on presenting a particular topic. In the past I have used them as online office hours; but I can see how with a little more structure, topic-wise, that could also be a helpful addition to on-line or on-ground courses.
