I just made $1011 this week working from home for google. I cant believe how easy this is. Im recommending this to everyone, check out this guys google blog makemoneywith-google.com
Wow! Home Depot. I did think about jobs like that, but w/a 15-year-old at home and a 10-yr-old granddaughter I have most weekends, it's hard to squeeze the work schedule of the 'real world' into 'my' world!! I did find an interesting website: guru.com where one can bid on all sorts of jobs in cyberspace. Now, it costs money to bid on the 'big jobs' and so I've just put in a few bids on little ones that are 'free' to bid upon, but I'm proud I gave it a try. I have also been contemplating how to cash in on ideas I've created at school and that I could probably market to ESL students. I was caught unprepared to be so underemployed this summer. :) My craziest summer/fall ever when I was an adjunct was when I worked at three different colleges: Brown College (formerly Brown Institute), Hamline's English Language School (now housed at St. Thomas) and the former Mpls Community College. I was like a little top spinning from school to school each day. Thank goodness gas was cheaper back then. For those of you who must travel from school to school, the current cost of transportation just adds the stress.
Maybe it's a good time to put in an application for a great grant or summer study. That way your summer will be assured and on your own schedule. I think I'm heading that way. By the by, I work some nights at (dare I say it) Home Depot---they're still hiring...though I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants to get any rest this summer.
I understand about waiting a long time in some fields..... I am amazed at how many ESL adjuncts are getting UFT positions around town; so much for 'metro alliance' and not offering / duplicating efforts on each and every campus. :) I also remember starting at the former MCC and meeting people even in English who had been at the college 15 years and they had not gotten a UFT position, yet. Politics within departments and schools also has a hand sometimes in the adjunct's future.............
Well, Yolanda, I am glad you chose MUSIC because you are so good at it...the world would be missing a lot if you were not in your chosen specialty area.
Have a good summer at MCTC. As for me, I am going through withdrawal and heartache because of my class being cancelled. I have never in my adult life not had a job in the summer (except for last year/surgery..doesn't count!).... so this is very difficult for me. I will survive, but it is very strange to not be working at the college.
I think it's the goal of many Adjuncts to be full-time, but it's difficult when you put as some of us do, so much work into a department, only to have to work full-time somewhere else. Depending on the dept. like Music, there might not be a UFT opening for 20+ years. I sometimes wish I had chosen Math, Science or English. Thanks for your support and kind words Ellen.
Thank you for your welcome, Yolanda! I applaud you for setting up this site. Being an adjunct is never easy. While I am lucky enough now to be UFT, I remember the days. I still, out of habit, look at the education want ads each weekend in the newspaper....how sick is that?? I've been a UFT since '92 and I still don't believe it sometimes. Anyway, even though this site is for adjuncts, it is nice of you to welcome me and encourage all/any teachers to join. If I can ever be your cheerleaders and/or encourage you as you apply for UFT openings at MCTC or other schools, I will urge you on. I have seen several very good teachers leave my department for Inver Hills, Century and North Hennepin..........one even went to Oman. It is never easy to say goodbye.

The discussion was wide ranging. Greg Mulcahey (MSCF president/state level) had a lot of questions about various contractual things. Richard Jewel and I talked more about how we managed being adjuncts--avoiding marginalization, etc. It was a very fr…

Thanks for the ideas, Yolanda.
I can't wait to see this site grow.
